Contradicting Global Warming
01.24.05 (6:08 pm)   [edit]

"The countdown to climate-change catastrophe is spelt out by a task force of senior politicians, business leaders and academics from around the world - and it is remarkably brief. In as little as 10 years, or even less, their report indicates, the point of no return with global warming may have been reached."

"The report urges all the G8 countries to agree to generate a quarter of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025, and to double their research spending on low-carbon energy technologies by 2010. It also calls on the G8 to form a climate group with leading developing nations such as India and China, which have big and growing CO2 emissions."

"What this underscores is that it's what we invest in now and in the next 20 years that will deliver a stable climate, not what we do in the middle of the century or later," said Tom Burke, a former government adviser on green issues who now advises business."

Ok, will some of you smart liberal environmentalist crazies please explain this to me?  First, as you can see in the quote I have, they state that in as little as 10 years we may pass the point of no return with global warming.  Then, in the same article, it states that the report urges all G8 countries to agree to generate a quarter of their electricity from renewable sources by the year....2025.  What??  Then it states that "this underscores that what we invest in now and in the next 20 years will help deliver a stable climate.

Ok, please explain this to me.  Are we or are we not headed for catastrophe in the next ten years if we don't do something?  If we are, why would the report urge these countries to put these policies into place by the years 2025?  I mean, if it is that dire, why wouldn't they urge them to do this right now?  Huh?  By this reports standards and own admissions, we might not be around by 2025.

Look, there are always things that we could do better when it comes to the environment.  No one will deny that.  Is it as dire as many want you to believe?  Well, I'm not sure how you could come to the conclusion that it is as dire.  These sort of "doomsday" reports have been coming out for decades now and each has stated that the next 20 years or so would be devistating if something isn't done.  I think it is very interesting that those responsible for this study would contradict themselves so clearly.

If I'm wrong and they aren't being contradictory, please let me know.  If you can prove to me then great, but I just don't see it in this article.

HA! that does not make any sense at all. They say our climate will reach the "point of no return" in 10yrs, but give a deadline of 20years to make changes?? GASP! Liberal ignorance exposed...YET AGAIN! not very difficult at all, is it?

Sadly, this is a case of selective quoting and/or not connecting the dots. The article stated that in ten years we'd reach a point that we wouldn't be able to prevent the 2C rise, not that the "devastating" effects of said rise would occur.

As for Deshanews himself...

"...why would the report urge these countries to put these policies into place by the years 2025?"

Several reasons:
1. Making these changes in just 5-6 years is unfeasible, therefore....
2. They're probably making suggestions to prevent a potentially bad situation from being even worse.

"By this reports standards and own admissions, we might not be around by 2025."

Um...no. It said there would be dangerous consequences, but they never even implied--yet alone stated--that it would be life-ending. Where on Earth did you get that idea?
